Root canal therapy, or root canal treatment, is a common dental procedure used to save damaged teeth from needing to be extracted. We offer in-office root canal therapy for our patients.

How does root canal treatment work?

When a tooth becomes damaged, cracks or cavities in the tooth can expose the soft inner tissue of the tooth (the pulp) and make it vulnerable to infection. If the pulp becomes infected the infection can spread to the tissues around the root of the tooth and create an abscess that can cause the loss of the tooth. We use root canal treatment to prevent this from happening and preserve the tooth.

The procedure involves making a small hole in the affected tooth, taking out the pulp, and disinfecting the tooth to keep infection from spreading. When the treatment is complete we seal the tooth and restore it with a crown.

Aren’t root canals painful?

Root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful, but with modern procedures they are normally no more uncomfortable than having a tooth filled. You may experience some local pain and sensitivity after your treatment as the area heals.

If you notice sharp pain or sensitivity around one of your teeth, or if you’ve injured a tooth, you may be at risk of infection. Contact us today to book an exam.
